Anugolo/Kahiha: A mild explosion at the NTPC Kaniha power plant in Anugolo district left five workers injured during the early hours of Saturday.
According to NTPC, the incident occurred around 12:30 am on August 22, 2026, at the bunker floor level of Bunker-B in Unit-1. The workers were reportedly working near the location when the incident occurred.
The injured workers were identified as Khageswar Sahu, 33, of Rangabeda, Sushant Kumar Sahu, 56, of Telisingha, Kishori Pradhan, 51, of Kamarei, Sukadev Bhutia, 52, of Tentei Bereni, and Balaram Naik, 25, of Nalam.
NTPC Kaniha Explosion Sends Two Workers to Bhubaneswar
Following the incident, the injured workers were taken to the NTPC hospital for medical attention.
Three workers received first aid and were reported to be in stable condition. Another worker required further medical treatment and was referred to SUM Ultimate Hospital in Bhubaneswar for specialised care.
A fifth worker was reportedly in normal condition. However, NTPC said he was also shifted to the Bhubaneswar hospital as a precaution so that advanced scans and further medical evaluation could be carried out.
NTPC Kaniha Explosion Under Technical Investigation
NTPC has not yet disclosed the specific cause of the explosion.
The company said a high-level technical team is investigating the incident to establish what led to the occurrence inside the bunker area.
The investigation will be important in determining whether the incident was related to equipment malfunction, operational conditions or another technical factor. Until the technical assessment is completed, the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
