Odisha government endorses proposal to offer three nutritious laddoos each week

Published on

Bhubaneswar: In order to improve the nutrition of schoolchildren, the Odisha government has authorized a proposal to offer three nutrient-rich laddoos every week.

These laddoos will be served during morning assembly on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for Rs. 3.50 each. These nutrient-rich laddoos will be distributed to students enrolled in the PM POSHAN Scheme beginning April 1, 2025.

In a letter to all Collectors, the School and Mass Education department informed that “These laddoos will be made of groundnut, sesame and millet with jaggery which are rich in fibre, iron and healthy fats and can act as good source of energy to all students enrolled from Class I to X in the Government and Government Aided Schools covered under PM POSHAN Scheme. The laddoos will be prepared by Cooks-cum-Helpers (CCHs) deployed in the schools.”

The School and Mass Education department requested the Collectors “to instruct all DEOs to provide guidelines and take necessary steps to implement the supplementary nutrition programme through providing nutrition-rich laddoos at Rs 3.50 for each laddoo per student. The detailed list containing the approximate number of students will be shared in a separate letter for further course of action”.

Purchasing and Sourcing

On a weekly basis, Headmaster (HM) may purchase raw millet, millet powder, peanut sesame, and other ingredients from the local market after verifying the product’s legitimacy and expiration date to ensure that the millet and other components are of high quality.

Cooks must keep their hands clean, and the containers used for preparation and storage must be dry and clean.

The purchased raw millet or millet powder/groundnut sesame together with other components should be stored in an airtight jar or container.

It is necessary for cooks to make nutritious laddoos either on the day of delivery or before, in order to preserve the laddoos’ quality. However, if the laddoos are made ahead of time, they should be stored in an airtight container for a maximum of 30 days in a clean and hygienic condition.
