Odisha Police Tighten Security in Maoist-Affected Nuapada Ahead of By-Election

Published on

Bhubaneswar: Security has been significantly stepped up in the Nuapada Assembly constituency ahead of the November 11 by-election, with the Odisha Police focusing on countering potential Maoist threats and ensuring peaceful polling.

14 CAPF Companies Deployed for Poll Duty

Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) Sanjay Kumar informed that 14 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed across Nuapada district to maintain law and order. He said the ground situation has been reviewed thoroughly and Superintendent of Police (SP) Amritpal Singh has been directed to ensure smooth and secure voting.

Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania had also visited Nuapada earlier to assess the situation and finalise security strategies for the bypoll.

Focus on Maoist Activity Along Chhattisgarh Border

The ADG stated that Nuapada shares a sensitive border with Chhattisgarh, a region that has witnessed several encounters with Naxals this year. Intelligence inputs indicate that Maoist presence still persists, prompting the police to intensify combing operations and surveillance.

To ensure a free, fair, and violence-free election, the Odisha Police have made layered security arrangements in coordination with Chhattisgarh Police, which has also established a check post along the interstate border.

Multi-Layered Security and Vigilance Measures

At least five police platoons and over 500 constables and home guards have been deployed throughout the district. Fourteen check posts have been set up in and around Nuapada, with additional monitoring points established in Kalahandi, Balangir, and Bargarh.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Himansu Kumar Lal has been assigned to oversee security operations in Nuapada, while ADG (SAP) Rajesh Kumar has been entrusted with overall supervision.

Flying Squads to Curb Illegal Activities

According to SP Amritpal Singh, 18 flying squads have been formed to conduct surprise inspections and prevent illegal transport of cash, liquor, and other contraband. The district administration and police are on high alert and fully prepared to ensure that polling is conducted peacefully and without incident.
