Bhubaneswar: The latest Odisha road accident deaths data reveals a grim picture of road safety in the state. A total of 53,551 people lost their lives in road accidents over the past decade, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state assembly on Monday.

The figures were shared in a written response to a question raised by Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray.

The statistics highlight the scale of road safety challenges faced across Odisha between 2016 and 2025.

Odisha Road Accident Deaths Data Reveals High Injury Numbers

According to the data presented in the assembly, road accidents during the ten year period also caused a large number of injuries.

Government records show:

61,186 people suffered grievous injuries
45,146 people sustained minor injuries
113,325 accident cases were registered statewide

The data suggests that while fatalities remain a major concern, the number of people injured in accidents is significantly higher, placing additional pressure on emergency and healthcare services.

Convictions and Pending Cases in Road Accident Deaths

Providing details of legal action related to accident cases between 2022 and 2025, the Chief Minister said:

185 people were convicted in cases involving deaths caused by negligence
4,266 accused were acquitted
189,191 cases are still pending trial

The figures highlight the large backlog of accident related cases currently awaiting judicial resolution.

How Road Accident Cases Are Investigated

The Chief Minister also outlined the process followed for investigating accident cases.

Complaints are registered as cases move forward, and the Holding Investigating Officer (HIO) is responsible for ensuring proper and timely investigation.

When required, independent prosecutors are appointed to conduct the cases in court.

According to the government, public courts are working to dispose of cases as quickly as possible to ensure justice is delivered.

Growing Focus on Road Safety

The accident statistics have once again brought attention to road safety challenges in the state.

Experts often point to factors such as speeding, traffic rule violations, poor road conditions and lack of awareness as major contributors to accidents.

The data suggests stronger enforcement, improved infrastructure and greater public awareness may be needed to reduce fatalities and injuries on Odisha’s roads in the coming years
