President of India Confers National Awards on Teachers

Published on

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, conferred the National Awards to Teachers at a ceremony held in New Delhi today.

In her address, the President emphasized that like food, clothing, and shelter, education is essential for dignity and security. Recalling her own days as a teacher, she described that period as “one of the most meaningful phases” of her life.

The President underlined that education empowers children from even the most humble backgrounds to achieve great heights, and that devoted teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of students, society, and the nation. “The biggest reward for teachers is when their students remember them throughout life and contribute meaningfully to society,” she noted.

Highlighting the importance of character-building, President Murmu said that students guided by moral conduct and responsibility are more valuable than those limited to competition and bookish knowledge. “A good teacher combines both intellect and emotion, and this balance leaves a lasting impact on students,” she said.

She stressed that while smart blackboards and modern classrooms are important, the most vital element is having smart teachers—those who understand the needs of their students and make learning engaging with affection and sensitivity.

Focusing on girls’ education, the President said investing in girls’ learning is the most effective way to ensure women-led development. She cited the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which prioritizes expanding Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and creating better facilities for underprivileged girls. She urged teachers to pay special attention to students who are shy or come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Concluding her speech, the President reiterated that the NEP 2020 aims to make India a Global Knowledge Superpower, and for this, India’s teachers must be recognized among the best in the world. She expressed confidence that Indian teachers will play a decisive role in strengthening school, higher, and skill education to place India firmly on the global stage.
