Rahul Gandhi Criticizes ‘Make in India’, Says India Assembles and Imports Instead of Building

Published on

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, claiming that while the campaign promised a manufacturing revolution, the ground reality is far from it.

During a visit to Delhi’s Nehru Place, a hub for electronics, Gandhi interacted with two technicians and pointed out that products like mobile phones are largely assembled in India but not genuinely manufactured. He posted a video of the interaction on social media platform X.

In his post, Gandhi questioned the effectiveness of the campaign, writing: “Make in India promised a factory boom. So why is manufacturing at record lows, youth unemployment at record highs, and why have imports from China more than doubled? The truth is stark: we assemble, we import, but we don’t build. China profits.”

The BJP government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform India into a global manufacturing hub. The BJP responded strongly to Gandhi’s remarks, defending the progress under the initiative.
