Hyderabad: A Revanth Reddy on Saturday asserted that the Congress government would continue providing free electricity to farmers and dismissed allegations that the scheme would be withdrawn or linked to smart meters.

Addressing the issue, the Chief Minister challenged the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to publicly declare that it would not contest the next Assembly elections if the Congress government failed to honour its promise of free power to farmers.

Revanth Defends Free Electricity Scheme

Revanth Reddy said Telangana remains committed to supplying quality round-the-clock free electricity to the agriculture sector.

Claiming that the Congress pioneered the concept of free power for farmers, he described the scheme as a key pillar supporting agricultural growth and rural prosperity.

The Chief Minister also alleged that the previous BRS government had initiated the process of installing smart meters through an agreement with the Centre in 2017.

Warning to Centre Over Crop Procurement

The Chief Minister also targeted the BJP-led Central government over crop procurement and Minimum Support Price (MSP) operations.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Revanth Reddy warned that if paddy and other crops are not procured at MSP by June 15, farmers’ produce would be dumped outside the residences of BJP and BRS leaders.

He maintained that the Centre must procure all crops for which MSP is announced.

The second-order effect of uninterrupted free power and assured procurement could strengthen agricultural output, improve rural incomes and boost overall economic activity in Telangana’s farming sector.

Proposal for Rythu Discom : Telangana Free Power for Farmers

Revanth Reddy announced plans to establish a dedicated Rythu Discom aimed at improving transparency in power procurement and distribution for agriculture and irrigation sectors.

According to the government, the proposed mechanism would utilise surplus renewable energy, reduce the financial burden on the state and strengthen power distribution companies.

The Chief Minister also highlighted rising electricity demand in Telangana, noting that power consumption has increased from 15,000 MW to 18,000 MW due to expanding economic activity and agricultural requirements.

The government said it remains committed to protecting farmers’ interests through uninterrupted electricity supply and agriculture-focused welfare initiatives.
