Sherfane Rutherford Traded to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans Ahead of IPL 2026

Mumbai: In a significant pre-season move, West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford traded to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Rutherford joins MI at his existing fee of INR 2.6 crore, marking his return to the franchise he previously represented in 2020.

Sherfane Rutherford Brings Power and Experience to Mumbai Indians

The 27-year-old cricketer, known for his explosive middle-order batting and useful seam bowling, has represented the West Indies in 44 T20 internationals. He holds the record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20Is — a remarkable 139-run stand with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth.

Rutherford’s inclusion strengthens MI’s all-round depth, offering flexibility in both batting and bowling departments. His aggressive style aligns with the franchise’s attacking approach under head coach Mark Boucher and skipper Hardik Pandya.

IPL Journey and Previous Stints

Rutherford has featured in 23 IPL matches so far, having donned the jerseys of Delhi Capitals (2019) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2022). Though he was part of the Mumbai Indians (2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) squads, he didn’t get a chance to feature in the playing XI during those seasons.

Mumbai Indians Eye Sixth Title with Renewed Squad Balance

Following the addition of Shardul Thakur and now Sherfane Rutherford, Mumbai Indians appear to be bolstering their all-round options ahead of the 2026 season. The team management believes Rutherford’s finishing ability and international experience will provide a valuable edge during crunch situations.

With this trade, MI continues its strategy of blending proven international talent with young Indian stars as it eyes a record sixth IPL title in the upcoming season.
