Soumyashree Suicide: BYJD, BCJD Slam Odisha Govt, ABVP; Demand Judicial Probe by Sitting HC Judge

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) and Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), youth and student wings of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), launched a blistering attack on the Odisha government and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over the tragic death of Soumyashree Bisi, the 20-year-old B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, who allegedly died by suicide after enduring sustained harassment.

At a press conference at Shankha Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, senior BJD leaders, including

  • General Secretary and MLA Byomkesh Ray,
  • MLA Debi Ranjan Tripathy,
  • Youth leader Dhruti Martha, and
  • Spokesperson Ipsita Sahu,

expressed deep grief and outrage over Soumyashree’s death, blaming the state machinery for ignoring repeated cries for help.

“The entire state is heartbroken. She begged for justice, but the Chief Minister, local police, and education authorities remained silent,” said MLA Ray.

Allegations of Post-Death Mishandling and Cover-Up

The leaders alleged that there was an attempt to secretly cremate Soumyashree’s body in Puri, under heavy police presence during late-night hours.

“It was only due to the strong resistance from her grieving family and our dedicated party workers that the body was taken to Palasia, her native village, for final rites,” they claimed.

The BJD youth wings announced the launch of statewide protests, vowing to intensify the agitation until accountability is fixed.

“This is just the beginning. Our protests will only grow stronger until the resignations of those responsible are secured,” declared MLA Debi Ranjan Tripathy.
They also demanded ₹2 crore compensation for Soumyashree’s family.

In a serious twist, BJD spokesperson Ipsita Sahu alleged that Soumyashree was a member of the ABVP and was driven to suicide due to harassment from within the organisation.

“Now the student community has seen the real face of the ABVP,” she said, adding that the Chief Minister, Higher Education Minister, Balasore MP, and local MLA all failed to intervene despite being aware of the situation.

BJD Demands Judicial Inquiry by Sitting High Court Judge

Rejecting any internal investigation mechanisms, BYJD and BCJD called for the probe to be handed over to a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court.

“Only a judicial probe by a sitting judge can uncover the truth. We do not trust administrative eyewash,” stated the leaders.

They urged students and youth across Odisha to join the movement and raise their voices until justice is delivered.

Background:
Soumyashree Bisi allegedly set herself ablaze on July 12 on campus after repeated complaints of harassment by HoD Samir Kumar Sahu went unheeded. She succumbed to burn injuries on July 14 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, triggering statewide outrage and political upheaval.
