Union Cabinet Approves ₹3,706 Crore Semiconductor Plant in UP’s Jewar by HCL-Foxconn JV

Published on

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved India’s sixth semiconductor facility—a ₹3,706 crore project to be established in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, through a joint venture between tech giant HCL and global electronics manufacturer Foxconn.

Scheduled to begin production in 2027, the plant will produce display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and personal computers. It will have the capacity to process 20,000 wafers per month, with an estimated output of 36 million units monthly.

According to an official government statement, five other semiconductor units are already in advanced stages of development. The addition of this sixth facility marks another significant step in India’s efforts to build a robust and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.

“The semiconductor industry is taking shape across the country, with world-class design centers emerging in several states. State governments are actively encouraging the growth of design firms,” the statement noted.

The Centre emphasized that the demand for semiconductors is rapidly rising due to the expansion of manufacturing in sectors such as laptops, smartphones, servers, medical devices, power electronics, defense, and consumer electronics. This new facility supports the Prime Minister’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

HCL brings decades of experience in hardware development and manufacturing, while Foxconn is a leading global player in electronics production—making the partnership a strong foundation for this strategic initiative.
