The tradition of Daruma dolls in Japan is inspired by Bodhidharma, an Indian monk from Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. Known in Japan as Daruma Daishi, Bodhidharma travelled to East Asia over a thousand years ago, spreading Buddhist teachings that later became the foundation of Zen philosophy.
