India Must Produce Rare Materials to Safeguard Technological Sovereignty: Rajnath Singh

Published on

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday emphasized that India must produce rare materials used in defence and aerospace to ensure self-reliance and protect the nation’s technological sovereignty. The minister was speaking while dedicating to the nation the Titanium and Superalloy Materials Plant at PTC Industries’ Strategic Materials Technology Complex in Lucknow.

Highlighting the global context, Singh pointed out that with China tightening export rules for rare earth elements, India needs to build its own ecosystem for critical material production. “India must produce rare materials used in defence and aerospace to become a technology creator and safeguard its technological sovereignty,” he said.

India Must Produce Rare Materials: Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Singh noted that rare earth materials play a crucial role in defence, space, electronics, and advanced engineering sectors. Only a few nations have the expertise to refine and convert these resources into high-end products, giving them significant strategic and economic leverage.

He stated that the newly inaugurated plant in Lucknow is one of India’s first private-sector manufacturing facilities capable of producing aero-engine components and superalloy materials—key elements in advanced defence and aerospace systems.

A Step Toward Technological Sovereignty and Innovation

The Defence Minister remarked that for decades, India had relied heavily on foreign nations for advanced materials and critical technologies required for defence and aerospace. Initiatives such as the new titanium and superalloy plant mark a turning point in India’s journey from dependence to dominance.

He said, “True strength lies not only in technology but in the ability to produce materials, components, chips, and alloys domestically.” The establishment of this facility positions India among a select few countries capable of producing such strategic materials independently.

Boosting India’s Defence Capabilities Through Indigenous Production

With the commissioning of this plant, India will now be able to manufacture critical components for fighter jets, missiles, naval systems, and satellites within the country. Rajnath Singh added that this step will reduce import dependency and enhance national security by ensuring consistent access to essential materials.

Application AreaMaterials Produced at the Plant Will Be Used In
Fighter JetsEngine turbine blades and structural components
MissilesHeat-resistant and lightweight alloy components
Naval SystemsCorrosion-resistant titanium structures
SatellitesHigh-strength materials for propulsion and casing

Building the Foundation of India’s Technological Power

Rajnath Singh concluded that while technology represents power, the real strength lies in materials. “Whether it is a semiconductor chip, a bullet, or an engine turbine, each relies on strategic materials. We are building a foundation that will secure India’s technological sovereignty for the future,” he asserted.

The establishment of this facility reflects India’s vision of becoming Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) in critical sectors and advancing towards its goal of being a global defence manufacturing hub.
