Bijapur: A major Maoist encounter in Bijapur unfolded on Friday morning, resulting in the killing of two armed cadres, including a key commander, during an ongoing security operation. The clash broke out in the dense forest region of Bijapur district after forces moved in on precise intelligence about Maoist movement in the area.
Officials said the operation remains active, with intermittent firing reported from multiple locations in the forested and hilly terrain.
Senior Maoist Commander Neutralised
Police sources identified one of the slain Maoists as Dilip Bedja, the chief of the National Park Area Committee of the outlawed group. Another armed cadre was also killed, and the bodies have been recovered from the encounter site.
There were unconfirmed reports suggesting the possible presence of senior Maoist leader Paparao, also known as Papa Rao, in the area. Authorities said official confirmation on his status is still awaited.
Intelligence-Based Operation Triggers Gunfight
The encounter began after a joint team of the District Reserve Guard launched a search and cordon operation based on actionable intelligence. As security personnel closed in, Maoist cadres opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange.

Officials said combing operations are underway and the death toll could rise as more areas are searched.
Arms Recovered, Operation Continues
Security forces have recovered two AK-47 rifles from the encounter site, along with other suspected weapons and ammunition. The entire zone has been sealed to prevent Maoist escape routes.
The operation is part of a sustained crackdown on insurgent networks across the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.
Part of Broader Anti-Naxal Push
The latest encounter marks a significant early-2026 success in the state’s intensified anti-Naxal campaign. Authorities said continued pressure through targeted operations, surrenders, and eliminations aligns with the Centre’s goal of eradicating Left-wing extremism by March 31, 2026.
Security forces remain on high alert as the operation in Bijapur’s forest belt continues.
