Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the BJP after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar confirmed he would move to the Rajya Sabha. Yadav claimed that his earlier allegation that the BJP had “hijacked” Nitish Kumar had now been proven correct.

Nitish Kumar confirmed that he will contest the Rajya Sabha election and said the new cabinet in Bihar would have his full support.

‘BJP hijacked Nitish Kumar’: Tejashwi Yadav

Speaking to reporters, Tejashwi alleged that the BJP had used political tactics to push Nitish Kumar out of the chief minister’s chair despite the NDA’s election slogan promising his leadership.

“Everyone knows that during the Bihar elections the slogan was ‘2025 se 30 phir se Nitish’. We had said even then that the BJP people had hijacked Nitish Kumar and would not let him stay in the chair for long,” he said.

He further claimed that the development validates his earlier prediction that Nitish Kumar would not remain chief minister for more than six months after the election.

Accusations against BJP

Tejashwi accused the BJP of undermining the mandate of Bihar’s voters and attempting to install a “rubber stamp chief minister” in the state.

“The BJP has a history of ruining its allies. They do not want leaders who speak for OBCs, Dalits or tribals,” he said.

Despite the criticism, he also acknowledged Nitish Kumar’s long service to the state and said the opposition had sympathy for him.

Opposition calls it a leadership coup

The development has drawn criticism from other opposition leaders as well. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh alleged that a “leadership coup” had taken place in Bihar.

In a social media post, Ramesh said the move amounted to a betrayal of the public mandate given during the elections.

JD(U) workers express surprise

Nitish Kumar’s decision has also surprised many members of his own party, the Janata Dal United.

Several JD(U) workers gathered outside the chief minister’s residence in Patna, expressing disbelief over the development. Some supporters even suggested that Nitish Kumar’s social media announcement might have been made after his account was “hijacked.”

Political implications for Bihar

Nitish Kumar, who has served multiple terms as chief minister, has been a central figure in Bihar’s politics for nearly two decades. His move to the Rajya Sabha could pave the way for a new leadership arrangement within the NDA government in the state.
