A review meeting of the Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana was held in Bhubaneswar to assess the progress and planning for the heritage development initiative of the Odisha government.
The meeting was chaired by Suryabanshi Suraj at the conference hall of the Culture Department. District collectors from several regions joined the discussion through virtual mode to review the implementation roadmap.
The data suggests that the scheme aims to preserve Odisha’s cultural legacy while creating new tourism and livelihood opportunities in the state.
Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana to Develop Heritage Villages
Under the Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana, the ancestral homes of eminent personalities, referred to as Baraputras, will be transformed into heritage spaces.
Planned infrastructure under the scheme includes:
- Museums at ancestral homes
- Installation of statues of eminent personalities
- Interpretation centres and libraries
- Conference halls and open-air theatres
- Supporting cultural and tourism infrastructure
The initiative is designed to preserve the memory of Odisha’s great leaders while educating younger generations about their contributions.
₹345 Crore Planned for First Phase Development
The first phase of the scheme will cover 25 distinguished personalities across Odisha.
According to officials, up to ₹15 crore will be allocated for each heritage village, taking the total estimated investment to around ₹345 crore.
District collectors have been directed to identify 2–3 acres of land in the concerned villages or nearby areas for developing the facilities.
Heritage Tourism and Local Livelihoods
The project also aims to strengthen local economies.
The plan includes establishing:
- Sales centres for local cuisine
- Outlets for handloom and handicraft products
- Cultural events and seminars highlighting the lives of the personalities
What the state government is aiming for is more than just heritage preservation. Officials say the villages will be developed into tourist destinations that create livelihood opportunities for local communities.
25 Eminent Personalities Identified in First Phase
The first phase includes several iconic figures from Odisha’s history and culture, including:
- Shaheed Laxman Naik
- Acharya Harihar Das
- Pandit Krupasindhu Mishra
- Jayee Rajguru
- Buxi Jagabandhu
- Pandit Nilakantha Das
- Fakir Mohan Senapati
- Veer Surendra Sai
- Shaheed Baji Rout
- Krushna Chandra Gajapati
- Pandit Raghunath Murmu
- Maa Ramadevi
- Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab
and several other renowned personalities from different districts.
Government Push for Cultural Preservation
During the meeting, Minister Suraj emphasised the importance of community participation and coordination among departments for successful implementation.
He said the scheme will help the younger generation understand the values, sacrifices and contributions of Odisha’s great personalities.

“The Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana will play a major role in preserving and promoting our cultural heritage while inspiring future generations,” the minister stated.
Officials from departments including tourism, works, panchayati raj, handicrafts and archaeology were also present at the review meeting.
The initiative is expected to strengthen heritage tourism and cultural awareness across Odisha while boosting local economic activity in the identified villages.
