  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • 1,399 cases of violence against officials reported in two years
  • 2023 recorded the highest number with 733 incidents
  • Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhubaneswar among worst-affected areas

Bhubaneswar: The surge in Odisha violence against government officials has raised serious concerns after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed that 1,399 cases of assault and misconduct have been recorded over the past two years. The data highlights a growing pattern of aggression toward public servants, cutting across departments and regions.

The figures, shared in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, indicate that such incidents are not isolated but part of a wider law-and-order challenge affecting both urban and rural areas.

Odisha Violence Against Government Officials: Year-Wise Breakdown

The data shows a sharp spike in 2023, which recorded 733 incidents, making it the most affected year. In 2022, 535 cases were reported, while 2024 has already seen 131 incidents so far, despite the year being incomplete.

This upward trend suggests that tensions between citizens and frontline government workers are escalating, possibly driven by administrative pressures, service delays, and local disputes.

Districts Reporting Highest Cases

Mayurbhanj has emerged as the most affected district with 126 reported incidents. Balasore follows with 104 cases, while Bhubaneswar, under the Urban Police District, has recorded 98 incidents.

Other districts like Ganjam, Bhadrak, and Cuttack also feature prominently, indicating that the issue is widespread and not limited to specific regions.

Why Attacks on Public Servants Are Rising: Odisha Violence Against Government Officials Reflects Broader Stress Points

Experts point to several underlying factors. Increasing public frustration over service delivery, growing workload on officials, and lack of awareness about legal consequences may be contributing to the rise in such incidents.

In many cases, frontline workers dealing with public grievances become easy targets during conflicts or delays.

Government Response and Crackdown Measures

The state government has assured strict action against offenders. Chief Minister Majhi stated that law enforcement agencies have been directed to respond swiftly and take strong legal steps against anyone involved in threatening or attacking officials.

The administration’s focus is on ensuring a safe working environment for government employees while maintaining smooth functioning of public services.

The situation underscores a critical challenge. Protecting public servants is not just about law enforcement but also about rebuilding trust between citizens and the system.
