Gajapati Urges ISKCON to Observe Rath Yatra and Snana Yatra on Traditional Tithis

  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Gajapati Maharaja has written to ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission over festival dates.
  • He urged that Snana Yatra and Rath Yatra be observed strictly according to traditional tithis.
  • The letter calls for global uniformity in celebrating Jagannath festivals.

PURI: The ISKCON Rath Yatra tithi issue has resurfaced after Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingh Deb, the Adya Sevaka of Lord Jagannath and Chairman of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee, expressed strong concern over the observance of Snana Yatra and Rath Yatra on dates that differ from the prescribed traditional tithis.

In a letter addressed to the Governing Body Commission (GBC) of ISKCON, the Gajapati Maharaja urged the organisation to ensure that all Jagannath temples under its administration celebrate these sacred festivals on the same tithis observed at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

ISKCON Rath Yatra Tithi Should Follow Traditional Calendar, Says Gajapati

The Maharaja stated that Snana Yatra, marking the sacred appearance day of Lord Jagannath, should be celebrated only on Jyeshtha Purnima, which falls on June 29, 2026. He also stressed that Rath Yatra should remain within the traditional nine-day festival period, beginning on Ashadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya (July 16, 2026).

The letter highlights the following points:

  • Snana Yatra should be observed only on the prescribed Jyeshtha Purnima tithi.
  • Rath Yatra celebrations should remain within the traditional nine-day festival period.
  • ISKCON has been requested to revise programmes that extend beyond the prescribed dates.
  • The appeal refers to earlier correspondence, scholarly opinions and recommendations of the Muktimandapa Pandita Sabha.

The Maharaja noted that although the GBC had earlier committed to observing Snana Yatra globally on the prescribed tithi, some ISKCON temples outside India have continued to celebrate the festival on different dates.

Why the ISKCON Rath Yatra Tithi Issue Is Significant

The observance of Jagannath festivals according to traditional tithis holds deep religious importance in the Jagannath tradition. Uniform celebration is regarded as essential for preserving the authenticity and continuity of centuries-old rituals associated with the Shree Jagannath Temple.

The second-order impact of the appeal could lead to renewed dialogue between the Jagannath Temple administration and ISKCON on achieving greater consistency in festival observance worldwide. A common calendar based on traditional tithis may also help avoid confusion among devotees and reinforce the cultural and spiritual identity of Jagannath traditions across different countries.

The Gajapati Maharaja clarified that while practical adjustments in the manner of celebration may be acceptable depending on local conditions, altering the prescribed tithis of Snana Yatra and Rath Yatra is inconsistent with established scriptural traditions. He has urged the GBC to review its earlier decision and align future observances with the guidance of recognised religious authorities and the traditions of the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
