- Around 20.14 lakh names have been removed from Odisha’s draft electoral roll.
- Voters can file claims and objections until August 4 if their names are missing.
- The final electoral roll will be published on September 6.
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Voter List Revision has resulted in the deletion of approximately 20.14 lakh voters following the month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted through door-to-door verification across the state. According to the draft electoral roll released on Sunday, the total number of registered voters has declined from 3,33,99,591 to 3,13,87,034.
Officials said the revision was carried out to improve the accuracy of the electoral roll by removing ineligible or duplicate entries while adding eligible new voters.
Odisha Voter List Revision Identifies Deceased, Shifted and Duplicate Voters
Chief Electoral Officer S. Gopalan said the draft electoral roll has been shared with all recognised political parties and that eligible citizens whose names are missing can submit claims and objections within the prescribed timeline.
The verification exercise found:
- 8.32 lakh voters were reported deceased.
- 10.07 lakh voters had shifted residence or could not be verified during enumeration.
- 1.58 lakh names were identified as duplicate registrations.
- 0.14 lakh entries were removed for other reasons.
- Around 1.98 lakh new voters have been added during the ongoing revision process.
The updated draft roll now includes 1.60 crore male voters and 1.53 crore female voters.
Why the Odisha Voter List Revision Imporatant
Periodic revision of electoral rolls is intended to ensure that voter databases remain accurate before future elections. Removing duplicate, deceased and shifted voters helps improve the integrity of the electoral process while ensuring eligible citizens are correctly registered.
The second-order impact of the revision could be more accurate voter rolls, smoother polling operations and reduced chances of duplication during elections. At the same time, the claims and objections process provides an opportunity for genuine voters to restore their names before the final publication.
The Chief Electoral Officer said voters whose names do not appear in the draft list can submit claims and objections through their Booth Level Officer (BLO) until August 4. Electors can also verify their details on the websites of the Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, and the Election Commission of India.
All claims and objections will be disposed of by September 2, after which the final electoral roll will be published on September 6.
