- Laxmivas village received national recognition for outstanding water management under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
- All 280 households now receive safe drinking water through a Narmada-based piped water supply.
- Community participation and coordinated government efforts played a key role in the village’s transformation.
Morbi: The Laxmivas village Jal Jeevan Mission initiative has earned national recognition for transforming rural drinking water access in Gujarat’s Morbi district. Once facing severe water scarcity and unsuitable groundwater for drinking, the village has developed a reliable piped water distribution system that now supplies safe drinking water to every household.
The achievement highlights how coordinated planning, government support and community participation can improve essential services in rural areas.
Laxmivas Village Jal Jeevan Mission Becomes a National Model
Laxmivas was honoured during the Jal Mahotsav in New Delhi for its successful implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission and its community-led approach to water management.
The village now receives drinking water through a Narmada-based piped supply network, replacing dependence on borewells that earlier failed to provide potable water.
Residents say the project has significantly improved daily life by ensuring a regular supply of clean drinking water.
According to local resident Shobhana Kavar, the village is located about seven kilometres from a lake, while borewell water was unsuitable for consumption. She said every household now receives adequate drinking water through the government supply system.
Another resident, Pranjivanbhai Kavar, said the Narmada Canal-based water supply scheme has addressed the long-standing shortage of safe drinking water in the village.
Community Participation Drives Rural Water Success
Officials of the Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) credited the achievement to close coordination between the Central Government, the Gujarat Government and local residents.
WASMO Unit Manager Mahesh Dama said the objective remains to provide safe drinking water to every household while ensuring that more villages meet the standards set under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
He added that authorities are working to strengthen drinking water infrastructure across Morbi district so that reliable and adequate water supply reaches every rural household.
Model for Sustainable Rural Water Governance
The transformation of Laxmivas demonstrates the impact of combining modern water infrastructure with active community involvement.
By ensuring universal household tap connections and promoting responsible water management, the village has emerged as a model for other rural communities seeking long-term solutions to drinking water challenges under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
