Donyi Polo Airport: The new name of Greenfield Airport

Published on

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has given its signal for the naming of the new Greenfield Airport as “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar”, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

In January 2019, the Government of India had given its ‘in-principle’ approval for the construction of the Hollongi Greenfield Airport, which is developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) with support from the Central Government and the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Resolution was passed by the Arunachal Pradesh Government to name the airport ‘Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar’, which reflects the people’s reverence of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo), and denotes the rich cultural heritage of the State.

The Donyi Airport in Hollongi, 15 km away from Itanagar, will include the state capital. The project is being developed by Airports Authority of India (AAI) with the help of Central Government and the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh at a cost of Rs. 646 crores.

The projected airport will lodge A-321 aircraft in the future. Its terminal structure, which spans 4100 square meters, will lodge 200 people during peak hours. The plan was developed as an energy-efficient structure with a rainwater harvesting system, and a long-term landscape plan is a part of the sustainable infrastructure development plan.
