The action has highlighted a much larger documentation compliance issue in Odisha, which has approximately 1.1 crore registered private and commercial vehicles.

The classification exercise has not ended with the 20 lakh vehicles already placed in the permanent archive.

Another 30 lakh vehicles have reportedly been placed in the temporary archive.

Owners of these vehicles may still have an opportunity to update their pending documents. Failure to comply within the applicable period could result in further action, including cancellation of registration.

This makes the temporary archive particularly important for vehicle owners who have expired insurance, PUC or other mandatory documents.

The latest figures also point to a significant insurance gap among vehicles registered in Odisha.

Around 65 lakh vehicles reportedly do not have valid insurance, while only about 40 lakh vehicles are understood to have all required documents in order.

The remaining vehicles have one or more documentation deficiencies.

The figures underline the importance of regularly checking vehicle records and renewing statutory documents before they expire.

Why Vehicle Owners Should Check Their Documents

Once an RC is cancelled, the vehicle cannot legally be operated on public roads.

For owners whose vehicles remain in the temporary archive, updating the necessary documents could be crucial to retaining their registration status.

Deepti Ranjan Patra, Additional Commissioner of the State Transport Authority, has urged vehicle owners to ensure that their RC, insurance, PUC and other mandatory documents remain valid.

The classification process is based on the central framework and Vahan data, limiting the state’s flexibility over the underlying policy.

The large-scale cancellations have also raised concerns about the financial impact on vehicle owners, particularly those who depend on older vehicles.
