Birmingham: England defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the third and final Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, completing a 3-0 series victory and securing their first-ever home Test series whitewash against Pakistan.
Chasing a target of 130, England were briefly put under pressure by Mohammad Abbas, who struck early. However, Joe Root and Jordan Cox steadied the innings with an unbeaten partnership to take England across the finish line.
Root scored 62 while Cox made 59 as England completed the chase without losing another wicket.
England vs Pakistan 3rd Test Ends in 3-0 Sweep
Pakistan finally showed significant resistance with the bat in the second innings after struggling throughout the series.
The visitors posted 449, their first total above 200 in the series. Debutant Razaullah was central to Pakistan’s fightback, taking four wickets in England’s first innings before producing an aggressive 81 from 63 balls.
Razaullah hit nine sixes during his innings, setting a record for the most sixes by a player on Test debut. Shan Masood added 95, while Babar Azam scored 76 and Azam Awais contributed 59.
Mohammad Abbas also scored 42 and shared a 120-run ninth-wicket partnership with Razaullah.
Pakistan Finally Finds Batting Form
Pakistan’s second-innings recovery came after England had dominated with the ball earlier in the match.
Ollie Robinson dismissed Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique for ducks, with Ayub recording a pair after also failing to score in the first innings. Gus Atkinson claimed three wickets, while Robinson, Josh Tongue and Dan Lawrence took two each.
England had chosen to bowl first after winning the toss, with Tongue, Jofra Archer and Robinson sharing all 10 Pakistan wickets in the opening innings.
Saud Shakeel was Pakistan’s leading scorer with 43, while Razaullah and Abbas added 11 and 21 respectively.
England Batters Set Up Comfortable Chase
England responded strongly in their first innings, with several batters making half-centuries without reaching three figures.
Emilio Gay scored 60, while Harry Brook made 75, Dan Lawrence 65, Jamie Smith 69 and Robinson 50.
After Pakistan’s second-innings total gave England a target of 130, Abbas briefly raised hopes of a fightback with early wickets.
But Root and Cox took control of the chase. Their unbeaten partnership removed any further doubt and secured an eight-wicket victory for England.
Root’s half-century also gave England’s captain a fitting finish to the series, as he began and ended the campaign with a fifty.
The victory completed a 3-0 Test series sweep, marking England’s first home whitewash of Pakistan in a Test series.
