This would accelerate Quantum Technology-led economic growth, nurture the country’s ecosystem, and position India as a leader in the development of Quantum Technologies and Applications (QTA).

The new national quantum mission targets developing intermediate scale quantum computers with 50-1000 physical qubits in 8 years in various platforms like superconducting and photonic technology.

Satellite-based secure quantum communications between ground stations within India over a range of 2000 kilometers, long distance secure quantum communications with other countries, inter-city quantum key distribution over 2000 kilometers, and a multi-node Quantum network with quantum memories are also among the Mission’s deliverables.

The national quantum mission will aid in the development of high-sensitivity magnetometers in atomic systems, as well as atomic clocks for precise timing, communications, and navigation. It will also aid in the design and synthesis of quantum materials for quantum device manufacture, such as superconductors, innovative semiconductor architectures, and topological materials. For quantum communications, sensing, and metrological applications, single photon sources/detectors and entangled photon sources will be created.

Four Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) on the areas of quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices will be established in major university and national R&D facilities. The hubs will focus on the development of new knowledge through basic and applied research, as well as the promotion of R&D in areas assigned to them.

NQM has the potential to elevate the country’s technological development eco-system to a globally competitive level. The mission would have a significant impact on the communication, health, financial, and energy sectors, as well as medicine development and space applications. It would provide a significant boost to national initiatives such as digital India, Make in India, Skill India, Start-up India, Self-reliance India, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
