- Odisha has announced a Rs 1,000 crore flood assistance package for affected people across the state.
- Farmers with more than 33% crop damage will receive compensation based on crop and land category.
- Relief will also cover livestock, fishing equipment, handloom tools and damaged household items.
Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a Rs 1,000 crore Odisha flood assistance package for people affected by the ongoing floods across the state. The relief measures cover farmers, livestock owners, fishermen, handloom workers and families who have suffered losses.
The government will provide free relief rice, crop input assistance and support for seeds, while farmers whose crops have suffered more than 33% damage will be eligible for specified compensation.
According to the Chief Minister, the floods have affected six districts, 74 blocks and around 9.4 lakh people across 1,381 villages. The government has also deployed specialised rescue teams while maintaining a zero-casualty target.
Odisha Flood Assistance: Crop Compensation Rates
Farmers facing more than 33% crop loss will receive input subsidy according to the type of land and crop affected.
The announced compensation rates are:
- Non-irrigated land: ₹8,500 per hectare
- Irrigated land: ₹17,000 per hectare
- Perennial crops: ₹22,500 per hectare
The state will also provide financial assistance for paddy and non-paddy crops, along with support for seeds. Affected farmers will receive free vegetable kits to help restart agricultural activities after floodwaters recede.
The focus on input support is significant because crop losses can affect farmers beyond the immediate damage, particularly when they need seeds and other materials to begin cultivation again.
Odisha Flood Assistance for Livestock and Household Losses
The relief package also covers losses suffered by livestock owners and fishing communities.
Compensation for animal deaths has been announced as follows:
- Cow/Bullock: ₹32,000 to ₹37,500
- Small cattle: ₹20,000
- Goat/Sheep/Pig: ₹4,000
- Chicken: ₹100 each, subject to a maximum of ₹10,000
Financial assistance will also be provided for damaged boats and fishing nets. In addition, the government has announced ₹5,000 assistance for purchasing handloom equipment.
Families affected by the floods will receive support for damaged utensils, clothing and household rice, expanding the relief package beyond agricultural losses.
Odisha Flood Assistance: Jajpur and Bhadrak Worst Hit
Jajpur is among the severely affected districts, with 10 blocks and 270 villages impacted. Around 2.8 lakh people have been affected and 77,680 people evacuated, while 203 relief centres have been opened.
In Bhadrak, four blocks and 149 villages have been affected. Around 2.59 lakh people have been impacted, with more than one lakh people evacuated and nearly 90 relief centres established.
Flooding has also affected Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara.
For rescue and relief operations, the Odisha government has deployed 45 ODRAF teams and eight NDRF teams, along with fire service personnel across the affected districts.
Majhi said no deaths had been reported so far and reiterated that the government’s objective is to maintain zero casualties during the flood response.
The next major challenge will be the assessment and distribution of assistance. With thousands of families affected, the speed and accuracy of damage verification will determine how quickly farmers and households can access the announced compensation and relief.
