- Odisha heavy rainfall warning remains in force for the next two days, with red, orange and yellow alerts issued for several districts.
- Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj are under a red warning for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
- Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph are also expected in parts of the state.
BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for two more days as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and north Odisha coast continues to influence the weather.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression was centred near latitude 22.5°N and longitude 88.3°E, close to Kolkata. The system was located around 180 km northeast of Baleshwar and is expected to move initially north-northwestwards before turning northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during the next 24 hours.
The system’s movement is keeping northern and western Odisha under heightened weather alert, with the possibility of intense rainfall, lightning and strong surface winds.
Odisha Heavy Rainfall Warning: Red Alert for Two Districts
For the first warning period, valid up to 8:30 am on August 18, IMD has issued a red warning for Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at one or two locations. Such rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems and increase the risk of localised flooding, waterlogging and disruption to road connectivity.
An orange warning has been issued for Baleshwar, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are also likely at one or two places across these districts, as well as Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.
Odisha Heavy Rainfall Warning Covers More Districts
Under the yellow warning, heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Subarnapur and Boudh.
These districts may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph.
The spread of warnings across northern, western and coastal Odisha indicates that the impact of the depression is not limited to one part of the state.
Odisha Weather Alert: Rain to Continue Into August 19
For the second warning period, from 8:30 am on August 18 to 8:30 am on August 19, IMD has issued an orange warning for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Bargarh.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in these districts.
A yellow warning has been issued for Sambalpur, Deogarh, Kendujhar, Subarnapur and Balangir, where heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph are also possible in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Kendujhar, Subarnapur and Balangir.
The continuing rainfall threat means residents in vulnerable areas should closely follow updated IMD advisories and local administration instructions. During thunderstorms, people should avoid open areas and stay away from trees, electrical installations and other exposed structures.
With the depression expected to move across eastern India, Odisha’s rainfall pattern could remain active even as the system gradually moves away from the coast. The next 48 hours will be particularly important for districts under red and orange warnings.
