DRDO and Indian Navy successfully flight-test an indigenously designed short-range surface-to-air missile

Published on

On Wednesday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully tested the indigenously built Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.

The flight test was conducted from a land-based vertical launcher, using a high-speed aerial target at very close range and low altitude.

It established the missile system’s Near-Boundary-Low Altitude capabilities.

The test was carried out with all weapon system parts deployed in battle mode.

These elements, which included missiles with an indigenous radio frequency seeker, a multi-function radar, and a weapon control system, operated as expected.

The system’s performance was validated using flight data acquired by several Range Instruments produced by ITR Chandipur.

“During the test, the target was destroyed by the missile executing the high turn rate required for engaging targets at very close range, and establishing the missile’s agility, reliability & pin-point accuracy,” the Indian government said in a statement.

DRDO wrote on X: “Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) was successfully flight tested today, against a high-speed aerial target at very close range and low altitude, establishing the Near-Boundary-Low Altitude capability of the missile system.”

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the industry on the missile system, describing it as confirmation of India’s excellent design and development capabilities in defence research and development.

“It will be an excellent force multiplier for the Indian Navy,” he told reporters.

Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and related teams on the successful flight test, stating that the missile, which is equipped with current technology, will provide the Armed Forces with an additional technological boost.
