Protests break out in Kolkata and Ahmedabad against Waqf Amendment Bill

Published on

Protesters swarmed the streets of Kolkata and Ahmedabad on Friday to oppose the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill.

The rallies, which began after Friday namaz, saw massive crowds block important city routes and raise chants against the legislation, which has prompted widespread outrage.

Various Muslim organisations in Ahmedabad also held protests against the bill’s provisions.

Muslim organisations in Bengaluru, Karnataka, protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill.

The measure, which passed the Rajya Sabha with 128 votes in favor and 95 against, had already passed the Lok Sabha with 288 MPs supporting it and 232 opposed. It is now awaiting President Droupadi Murmu’s signature to become law.

The measure reduces Waqf institutions’ statutory payment to boards from 7% to 5% and mandates state-appointed auditors for institutions generating more than ₹1 lakh. It also suggests a consolidated platform for administering Waqf properties to increase transparency.

A crucial component assures that women receive their inheritance before any Waqf announcements are made, as well as provisions for widows, divorcees, and orphans. The bill also reinstates pre-2013 restrictions, allowing Muslims who have practiced their faith for at least five years to donate land to the Waqf.

Supporters claim that the bill increases transparency and protects women’s rights, while detractors see it as an infringement on religious freedom.
