‘ALL EYES ON HCU’ Trends as Protests Erupt Over Kancha Gachibowli Land Auction

Published on

Hyderabad: As University of Hyderabad (UoH) students continue to demonstrate against the Kancha Gachibowli property auction controversy, similar demonstrations are trending online. By posting “ALL EYES ON HCU” and “SAVE HCU BIODIVERSITY” templates on their Instagram stories, netizens band together to support the cause. More than 4,700 people on the internet re-shared the templates.

In addition to students, celebrities have joined the cause and are challenging the government’s plan to clear the forest.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu, a Tollywood actress, also expressed support for preserving Kancha Gachibowli’s biodiversity-rich terrain. On her Instagram account, she posted the Telangana Today article about the ecological consequences of the devastation.

Prakash Raj, an actor who is now a politician, also criticized the government’s action. This devastation is unacceptable,” the star commented on X. This isn’t good. I support the residents and students in opposing such heinous acts. In order to save the future, he asked everyone to spread the word and make the protest bigger.

Several politicians, celebrities, influencers, and regular people joined YouTuber and educator Dhruv Rathee in denouncing the Congress government for removing Greenary in the name of development.

Dhruv Rathee responded to the social media outcry about the large number of bulldozers being used on the university campus by calling it intolerable. He called on Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, to act and put an end to this devastation in Telangana.

Bollywood actress Dia Mirza took to X, to extend support for the ongoing protest. She wrote, “Students are raising their voices for a future where nature thrives. Forests, not IT parks, offer young people a chance at a sustainable tomorrow. ‘Development’ at the cost of biodiversity is DESTRUCTION. Save Kancha Forest in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.”

The State government recently decided to auction the 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli and started clearing the trees besides levelling the land as part of pre-auction process.

As per the petition started by Kirti C, who resides next to the forested land, auctioning the land will directly imperil the rich biodiversity, and indirectly, peoples life.

“Famed for its eco-diversity, Kancha Gachibowli is not just a forest, but a green lung, a natural sink making significant contributions to the overall air quality and ameliorating climate change impacts. By absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide, forests are crucial in our fight against global warming,” it read.

The petition, which already has 97,740 signatures, strongly requested the concerned authorities to roll back the proposed auction of Kancha Gachibowli forest land by TGIIC. “Safeguarding our environment is not just an ethical commitment but a survival imperative,” it said and asked more to join the petition.
