Tamil Nadu: PM Modi Inaugurates Pamban Sea Bridge

Published on

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the government’s extensive efforts over the past decade to enhance infrastructure and improve connectivity across all corners of India.

Speaking at a public meeting in Rameswaram, he inaugurated the Pamban vertical lift sea bridge and laid the foundation for ₹8,300 crore worth of rail and road projects in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s development plays a crucial role in the nation’s overall progress.

Calling the vertical lift sea bridge a “21st-century marvel,” he praised the engineers behind this groundbreaking project, which allows both ships and trains to navigate efficiently. He noted that the bridge would boost trade, tourism, and job opportunities, improving the ease of doing business. Modi also expressed the significance of offering prayers at the ancient Rameswaram Temple while inaugurating the project, calling it a special gift on Ram Navami, and recalling Lord Ram’s references in Sangam literature.

Underscoring the government’s priority on infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu, Modi pointed out that the state’s railway budget has increased over sevenfold in the last ten years. Before 2014, Tamil Nadu received ₹900 crore annually for railway projects, whereas this year, the allocation exceeds ₹6,000 crore. He also noted that 77 railway stations, including Rameswaram station, are being modernized as part of this transformation.

Highlighting Tamil culture and language, Modi urged the state government to allow medical students to study in their mother tongue. He also criticized certain politicians for failing to sign official letters in Tamil.

Reflecting on the achievements of the past decade, Modi mentioned that the budget for roads, airports, ports, energy, and infrastructure has increased sixfold. He cited projects like the Eastern and Western Freight Corridors, Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat rail services, which have significantly enhanced logistics and transportation networks.

Addressing the fishermen issue, Modi emphasized that the central government’s efforts have led to the release of 3,700 Indian fishermen from Sri Lankan prisons in the past decade, with over 600 freed this year alone.
