PM Modi lays foundation for ₹1010 crore City Gas Distribution project in Alipurduar, West Bengal

In a major stride to boost India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of a CGD project in Alipurduar, West Bengal. Speaking at the event, he greeted the people of the state and highlighted Alipurduar’s cultural and geographical significance. Flanked by Bhutan and Assam and surrounded by the scenic Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar, the region holds a rich legacy. The Prime Minister acknowledged the land’s contribution to Bengal’s heritage and unity.

Bengal’s Role in India’s Development Journey

Stressing the vital role of Bengal in India’s growth story, PM Modi reiterated that the state’s progress is key to achieving the vision of a developed India. He announced the launch of the CGD project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar, which aims to provide clean piped gas to over 2.5 lakh homes. He emphasized that this initiative will reduce dependence on LPG cylinders, make gas more accessible, and improve the environment while saving time and money. Congratulating the citizens, he called the project a symbol of the government’s resolve to deliver essential services to people’s doorsteps.

Expanding India’s Gas Network: From 66 to 550 Districts

The Prime Minister highlighted the exponential growth of India’s CGD network—from just 66 districts in 2014 to over 550 districts now. He pointed out that piped gas has now reached even rural and small-town households. The adoption of CNG has revolutionized public transport, lowering pollution and easing financial burdens on citizens, thereby improving health and quality of life.

Ujjwala Yojana: Empowering Women and Promoting Clean Cooking

Modi praised the success of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in 2016, for uplifting millions of poor women. He noted that the scheme helped transition households away from smoky kitchens by promoting clean cooking fuel, enhancing health and dignity. He added that LPG connections rose from under 14 crore in 2014 to over 31 crore today. The number of LPG distributors has also doubled, ensuring accessibility even in rural areas.

Urja Ganga Project: Revolutionizing Energy Access in Eastern India

Calling the Urja Ganga Project a game changer, PM Modi said it has extended pipelines across eastern states, significantly improving gas availability in West Bengal. The project has spurred job creation through infrastructure development and has supported industries dependent on gas. He reiterated that India is moving towards an energy future that is clean, affordable, and universally accessible.

Bengal’s Cultural and Economic Importance to India’s Growth

Modi acknowledged Bengal’s historic contributions to culture, science, and knowledge. He said Bengal’s growth is indispensable to India’s development and outlined major infrastructure projects initiated by the Centre—such as the Purva Expressway, modernization of Kolkata Metro, and transformation of New Jalpaiguri Station—as part of this effort. Calling the CGD project a “lifeline of progress,” he reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ease of living and a prosperous future for Bengal.

The event was attended by Union Minister Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Shri Suvendu Adhikari, and Alipurduar MP Shri Manoj Tigga, along with other dignitaries.

Project Overview: Clean Fuel and Economic Opportunity

The ₹1010 crore CGD project is set to deliver piped natural gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households, support more than 100 commercial and industrial units, and supply CNG to vehicles through 19 new stations. Besides offering a clean and cost-effective fuel solution, the project is expected to generate employment and boost the local economy.
