Odisha Celebrates Raja Festival with Joy and Tradition

Published on

Bhubaneswar: The state of Odisha is immersed in celebrations as the vibrant and culturally significant Raja Festival begins. This unique three-day festival, dedicated to womanhood, fertility, and the Earth’s menstruation cycle, is being observed with traditional fervor, joy, and festivity across towns and villages.

What is Raja Festival?

The Raja (pronounced as Ro-jaw) festival marks the onset of the monsoon season and is deeply rooted in Odia culture. The name “Raja” is derived from the word “Rajaswala,” which refers to a menstruating woman. During this festival, it is believed that Mother Earth undergoes menstruation and is therefore given rest and care, just as a woman would be.

Three Days of Celebration

  • Pahili Raja (First Day): Preparations begin, houses are cleaned, and girls get new clothes. Families prepare special sweets and delicacies.
  • Raja Sankranti (Second Day): The main day of celebration, where swings are hung from trees, girls and women wear traditional attire, play games, and apply alta (red dye) to their feet.
  • Basi Raja (Third Day): It is a day of rest and continuation of the festivities. The fourth day, called Basumati Snana, involves bathing the grinding stone symbolizing Mother Earth.

Food, Games, and Swinging Fun

Special festive foods such as Poda Pitha, a slow-cooked rice cake, are prepared in households. Girls play traditional games, ride on decorated swings, and enjoy their time with friends and family. Markets across Odisha are bustling with activity, as people shop for clothes, sweets, and home decor.

Cultural Programs and Community Involvement

Various cultural events, folk dances, and music performances are organized in cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. Schools and community groups also hold Raja-themed competitions to encourage young people to engage with their traditions.

Beyond its rituals, Raja Utsav celebrates the power and dignity of womanhood, promotes the message of self-care, environmental respect, and gender sensitivity. It’s a festival that beautifully blends cultural pride with ecological consciousness.
