Operation Sindhu: 827 Indians Evacuated from Iran

Published on

New Delhi: India’s evacuation mission Operation Sindhu continues as tensions escalate in the Middle East. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 827 Indian nationals have now been evacuated from Iran, with additional assistance provided to citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Two More Flights Land Safely in India from Iran

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, two evacuation flights from Mashhad, Iran, were organized by the Indian government. The first arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at 4:30 PM, and the second was expected to land around 11:30 PM. These special flights were conducted with Iranian government cooperation, which temporarily eased airspace restrictions for the mission.

India Evacuates Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka

Following requests from Nepal and Sri Lanka, India has extended Operation Sindhu to help evacuate citizens of both nations. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba expressed gratitude, saying India’s support reflects the strength of Nepal-India ties. Likewise, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry thanked India, calling it an “act of solidarity” and a symbol of enduring partnership.

MEA Confirms Updated Evacuation Numbers

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on Saturday that the total number of Indians evacuated from Iran had reached 827, up from 517 a day earlier. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to facilitating the safe return of its nationals from other conflict zones including Israel.

Evacuation Efforts Also Ongoing from Israel

The Indian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, confirmed that a group of Indian citizens had safely crossed the Taba land border from Israel into Egypt. The embassy team provided logistical and emergency assistance and continues to coordinate with Egyptian authorities for further evacuations.

Previous Phases Included Other Countries

Earlier stages of Operation Sindhu saw Indian nationals being rescued from Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), Yerevan (Armenia), and Qatar, as the government responded to evolving conflict zones in the region.
