Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the strategic and economic importance of Visakhapatnam Port during his visit to Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. His visit was part of the launch of the second edition of the BIMSTEC Ports Conclave, aimed at strengthening regional maritime cooperation.

As part of his visit, the Minister laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹320 crore. These projects are linked to the Dredging Corporation of India and the Mercantile Marine Department, and are expected to significantly enhance port efficiency and operational capacity.

Visakhapatnam Port: A Global Maritime Performer

Speaking at the event, Sonowal emphasized that Visakhapatnam Port has been operational for 92 years and currently holds the 19th rank globally in the Container Port Performance Index, a testament to its rising global significance.

He revealed that the port handled 82.62 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in the previous financial year, underscoring its role in boosting India’s trade and logistics infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, the Minister inaugurated the 2nd edition of the BIMSTEC Ports Summit (BIMSTECH), an initiative focused on fostering collaboration among Bay of Bengal nations in the maritime and port sectors.

The conclave serves as a platform to share best practices, drive infrastructure growth, and promote regional trade integration among BIMSTEC member nations.

The Minister reiterated the central government’s commitment to modernizing ports and creating world-class maritime logistics hubs across India. He added that Visakhapatnam will continue to be a model port, supporting India’s vision of becoming a global maritime power.
