Odisha Crime Branch Takes Over Investigation Into FM College Student Soumyashree Bisi’s Self-Immolation

Published on

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police has handed over the investigation into the tragic self-immolation of FM College student Soumyashree Bisi to the State Crime Branch, signaling the seriousness and sensitivity of the case that has sparked statewide outrage.

Vinaytosh Mishra, Director General of Police, CID-Crime Branch, has assigned the case to DSP Iman Kalyan Nayak of the Crime Against Women & Children Wing (CAW & CW) in Bhubaneswar. He will serve as the Investigating Officer (IO) for the case, which was originally registered at Sahadevkhunta Police Station in Balasore.

To support the investigation, Inspector Panchali Rout has been appointed to assist DSP Nayak. The Crime Branch will now operate with full authority under Rule 431(C) of the Odisha Police Manual Rules, giving the DSP powers to act as Officer-in-Charge of the Sahadevkhunta Police Station for the purpose of this case.

The case has now been re-registered under CAW & CW Police Station Case No. 05/2025, and is being investigated under relevant legal provisions pertaining to abetment to suicide, sexual harassment, and negligence by authorities.

Soumyashree Bisi, a B.Ed second-year student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, succumbed to burn injuries after setting herself ablaze on campus. She had allegedly been a victim of sexual harassment by a professor and received no timely action despite filing complaints, prompting her to take the extreme step.
