UIDAI Deactivates Over 1.17 Crore Aadhaar Numbers of Deceased Persons

Published on

In a significant move to improve the accuracy and integrity of the Aadhaar database, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated over 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals. The initiative is part of a wider effort by UIDAI to ensure that its data remains current and trustworthy.

Partnership with Registrar General of India

The UIDAI has undertaken this exercise in collaboration with the Registrar General of India (RGI). As part of the process, RGI shared 1.55 crore death records from 24 States and Union Territories, sourced from the Civil Registration System (CRS). These records were then thoroughly verified before UIDAI proceeded to deactivate the associated Aadhaar numbers.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology confirmed that deactivation work is also underway in non-CRS States and UTs, from which 6.7 lakh death records have been received so far.

To further streamline the process, UIDAI has launched a new online service — ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ — available on the myAadhaar Portal. Currently, this service is accessible in 24 CRS-using States/UTs, enabling family members to notify UIDAI of a loved one’s demise and initiate deactivation.

In addition to working with the RGI, UIDAI is exploring the possibility of sourcing death data from banks and other Aadhaar ecosystem partners who may have access to such information. The agency is also urging State Governments to support the effort by helping identify deceased Aadhaar holders.
