Massive Influx of Over 2.5 Crore Kanwariyas in Haridwar as Shravan Kanwar Yatra Reaches Final Phase
The Kanwar Mela in Haridwar, observed during the holy month of Shravan, is nearing its final phase. So far, more than 2.5 crore Kanwariyas have collected Gangajal from the Ganga and are en route to their home temples. Among them, a rising number of “Dak Kanwariyas” – pilgrims who head straight to their destination without halts – have begun arriving in the city in vehicles outfitted with loudspeakers and devotional music systems.
The Bairagi Camp’s temporary parking area has already reached full capacity due to the growing influx of these Dak Kanwariyas. In response, the district administration is maintaining a high-alert status to ensure safety and order.
What is the Dak Kanwar Tradition?
Dak Kanwariyas typically collect Gangajal and immediately set off for their Shiva temples, often without stopping. While many travel by foot, a large number now use vehicles – from motorbikes to larger vans – equipped with high-volume speakers playing bhajans and DJ music, creating an electrifying spiritual atmosphere across Haridwar.
Foot Pilgrims Also Picking Up Pace
In addition to the vehicular pilgrims, many traditional Kanwariyas on foot have accelerated their journey to coincide with the final stretch of the Mela. The streets of Haridwar echo with devotional chants, energetic music, and saffron-clad devotees.
Administration Urges for Discipline
With the swelling numbers, local authorities have appealed to all Kanwariyas to uphold discipline and decorum during their spiritual journey. Officials anticipate that the total footfall of Kanwariyas this season may exceed six crores, setting a record turnout in Haridwar.
