Citizenship of India: Key Provisions Under Citizenship Act, 1955

The citizenship of India is regulated under the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the rules framed under it. Indian citizenship can be acquired through the following ways:

  • By Birth (Section 3)
  • By Descent (Section 4)
  • By Registration (Section 5)
  • By Naturalization (Section 6)
  • By Incorporation of Territory (Section 7)

The eligibility criteria for acquiring or determining citizenship are strictly defined in the Act and its accompanying rules.

Birth and Death Registration Under RBD Act, 1969

The registration of births and deaths across the country is carried out under the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969. As per the law, every birth and death in India must be recorded by the concerned state or union territory authority.

Based on the annual reports received from the Chief Registrars of Births and Deaths (CRBD) of various states and union territories, the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India publishes a yearly national report titled:
“Vital Statistics of India Based on the Civil Registration System (CRS)”.

This report contains state-wise and national data on the total number of registered births over the last 25 years (Annexure I).
