BJP Alleges Sonia Gandhi on Voter Roll Before Citizenship, Shares ‘Paper Proof’

Published on

The BJP has accused Congress leader Sonia Gandhi of being listed as an Indian voter twice before she was granted Indian citizenship. BJP’s Amit Malviya alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s name first appeared on the New Delhi parliamentary constituency voter list in 1980 — three years before she became a citizen and while still holding Italian citizenship.

According to Malviya, following public outrage, her name was deleted in 1982 but reappeared in January 1983, again before she officially obtained citizenship in April 1983. “This is a glaring violation of electoral law,” Malviya tweeted, adding that the Gandhi family’s address at the time was 1, Safdarjung Road, the official residence of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Timeline of the Sonia Gandhi Voter Roll Controversy

Malviya outlined that in the 1980 electoral roll revision — with January 1, 1980, as the qualifying date — Sonia Gandhi’s name was added at serial number 388 in polling station 145. Under Indian law, only citizens can be registered as voters. In 1983, her name was listed again at serial number 236 in polling station 140, despite the qualifying date being January 1, 1983, months before her April 30 citizenship grant.

“This means Sonia Gandhi was on India’s voters’ list twice without fulfilling the basic citizenship requirement,” Malviya alleged, questioning why it took her 15 years after marrying Rajiv Gandhi to apply for citizenship.

Political Context and Opposition’s Response Pending

The BJP’s allegations come at a time when the Opposition is protesting against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, accusing the EC and BJP of voter manipulation ahead of the state Assembly elections. The Congress has not yet issued an official response to the claims.
