New Delhi: Electronic toll collection through FASTag has seen growth over the past few years. The total toll collection through FASTag at toll plazas, including state highway tolls, during the calendar year 2022 was Rs. 50,855 crore, an increase of approx. 46% compared to Rs. 34,778 crore in 2021.

The average daily toll collection through FASTag at NH toll plazas in December 2022 was Rs 134.44 crore and the highest single day collection touched Rs. 144.19 crore on December 24, 2022.

Similarly, the number of FASTag transactions saw an increase of approx. 48% in 2022 compared to 2021. The number of FASTag transactions in 2021 and 2022 were 219 crore and 324 million respectively.

With 6.4 crore FASTags issued to date, the total number of FASTag authorized tolls across the country has also increased to 1,181 in 2022 (including 323 state highway tolls) from 922 in the previous year 2021. MOUs have been signed with 29 different state authorities for on-boarding state fees under FASTag scheme which include states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka etc.

The implementation of FASTag has significantly reduced waiting time at NH Fee Plazas, resulting in a better user experience. The continued growth and acceptance of the FASTag system by highway users has helped to increase the efficiency of toll operations. The deployment of an electronic toll collection system at various toll plazas along the national highways has brought transparency to the system and enabled proper valuation of road assets, which has encouraged more investors to invest in the country’s highway infrastructure, especially asset recycling.
