Iran Moves to Close Strait of Hormuz After US Strikes on Nuclear Facilities

Published on

Tehran: In a major escalation following the recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, Iran’s parliament has approved a motion to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping lane. According to Iranian state media, the final decision now rests with the Supreme National Security Council, which is expected to convene soon.

Strait of Hormuz: A Global Oil Lifeline

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical maritime routes in the world, with nearly 20% of global oil supply and over a third of liquefied natural gas (LNG) passing through it daily. The strategic waterway connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, serving as a vital artery for global energy trade.

Narrow, Vulnerable, and Now Politically Volatile

At its narrowest point, the strait spans just 33 kilometers, with shipping lanes only 3 kilometers wide in each direction — making it highly vulnerable to blockades or military threats. While analysts had long believed Iran would avoid closing the strait, today’s military developments appear to have shifted Tehran’s stance.

Global Implications Loom as Decision Nears

If implemented, the closure could severely disrupt global oil and gas supply chains, escalate regional tensions, and trigger a wider economic and military fallout. Energy markets and world powers are closely monitoring the Supreme National Security Council’s final verdict in the coming days.
