Tehran: In a major escalation following the recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, Iran’s parliament has approved a motion to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping lane. According to Iranian state media, the final decision now rests with the Supreme National Security Council, which is expected to convene soon.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical maritime routes in the world, with nearly 20% of global oil supply and over a third of liquefied natural gas (LNG) passing through it daily. Narrow, Vulnerable, and Now Politically Volatile
At its narrowest point, the strait spans just 33 kilometers, with shipping lanes only 3 kilometers wide in each direction — making it highly vulnerable to blockades or military threats. While analysts had long believed Iran would avoid closing the strait, today’s military developments appear to have shifted Tehran’s stance.
