Is TikTok Making a Comeback in India After 5 Years of Ban? Here’s What We Know

Published on

TikTok, the popular short-video platform, has been banned in India since June 2020 after crossing 200 million active Indian users. Recently, speculations about its return have gone viral as the TikTok website became accessible to some users. However, no official confirmation has been issued by either the company or the Indian government.

Why was TikTok banned in India in 2020?

The ban was imposed under the Modi government’s digital strike, targeting TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps over concerns related to data privacy and national security. The decision came amid rising border tensions with China, leading to TikTok’s abrupt exit despite its massive popularity.

TikTok website opens, but app remains unavailable

While TikTok’s official website is live in India, many users on X (formerly Twitter) reported that they still cannot access it. The TikTok app is not available on either Google Play Store or Apple App Store, suggesting that the website’s visibility might be limited testing or a technical change, rather than a full comeback.

The TikTok comeback buzz comes at a time of easing diplomatic tensions between India and China. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently visited India, meeting PM Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss bilateral ties. PM Modi is also expected to attend the SCO Summit in China later this month, leading to speculation that some Chinese apps might return to India.

Despite the buzz, the TikTok ban in India is still active. Without government approval, the app cannot legally operate in the country. For now, all eyes are on whether this renewed speculation will transform into an official comeback announcement or remain just a temporary website glitch.
