India Keen to Collaborate with South African Pharma and Food Companies

Published on

Indian companies in the food and pharmaceutical industries are eager to collaborate with their South African counterparts, Deputy Consul General in Johannesburg Harish Kumar said on Thursday. Speaking at a media briefing ahead of the Pharm Health South Africa and Food Show South Africa, Kumar highlighted the potential for joint ventures to boost local manufacturing and affordable healthcare.

The twin events — Pharm Health South Africa and Food Show South Africa — will be held from August 27 to 29 in Johannesburg, with over 30 Indian companies participating. According to Kumar, South African companies could benefit from India’s cost-competitive manufacturing base, large consumer market, and world-class R&D ecosystem.

EU-recognised certification boosts collaboration

Anton Coetzee, Financial Director of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association of South Africa (MDMSA), noted India’s advantage in compliance.

“Due to its manufacturing size, many European Conformity Assessment bodies have set up offices in India and trained local staff to meet EU audit requirements,” he said. This allows India-based EU-recognised certification bodies to audit South African manufacturers, while also enabling local auditors to be trained for surveillance and unannounced audits on behalf of the EU.

The Consulate General of India is organising the upcoming expos in collaboration with Genesis Global Exhibitions, Ace Group, and Astovision. The initiative aims to deepen trade ties, encourage knowledge exchange, and open new doors for cooperation in healthcare and food security between the two nations.
