BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Textbook Errors controversy has prompted the state government to order a high-level investigation after more than 1,600 mistakes were reported in school textbooks for Classes I to VIII. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the government is treating the issue with utmost seriousness and announced that all faulty books distributed to students will be withdrawn and replaced with corrected editions.
Speaking during the Times Health Icons Odisha 2026 event, the Chief Minister said the unusually large number of errors requires a thorough examination of the textbook preparation and printing process. He stated that while mistakes had occurred in previous years, the scale of the current issue was unprecedented.
Odisha Textbook Errors Probe to Examine Printing and Publication Process
Majhi said a committee has been constituted to investigate how such a large number of errors appeared in textbooks meant for school students. According to him, the panel was initially given 15 days to submit its findings, but he reduced the deadline to seven days to ensure a quicker investigation.
The Chief Minister also stated that the inquiry would identify individuals responsible for the lapses and that strict action would be taken against those found accountable.
He further remarked that the magnitude of the mistakes raises suspicion of a possible conspiracy to defame the government. However, he indicated that the investigation would determine whether there is evidence to support that allegation.
Why the Odisha Textbook Errors Issue Matters
The controversy extends beyond printing mistakes because school textbooks form the foundation of classroom learning for lakhs of students. Errors in educational material can affect learning outcomes, create confusion among students and teachers, and undermine confidence in the education system.
The second-order impact could include tighter quality control mechanisms, stronger editorial oversight and reforms in textbook preparation and printing procedures. The episode may also lead to greater accountability in government publishing processes to prevent similar incidents in future academic sessions.
The Chief Minister announced that all textbooks containing errors will be recalled and replaced with revised editions carrying corrected content. He also warned that if the investigation establishes deliberate wrongdoing or a conspiracy, the government will recover the cost of printing the revised textbooks from those found responsible.
The findings of the seven-day inquiry are expected to determine both the cause of the errors and the administrative action that follows.
