- Heavy rainfall and gusty winds up to 60 kmph are expected.
- Southwest monsoon is likely to advance further across the state in the next few days.
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha weather alert has intensified as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast further advancement of the southwest monsoon across the state over the next two to three days. Alongside the monsoon progress, the weather department has issued Orange Warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds affecting several districts.
The forecast signals a transition from intense summer heat to active monsoon conditions, bringing both relief and potential weather-related disruptions.
Orange Warning Issued for Multiple Districts
The IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph at isolated locations in several districts, including:
- Balasore
- Keonjhar
- Mayurbhanj
- Rayagada
- Koraput
- Malkangiri
- Gajapati
- Ganjam
- Bhadrak
- Jajpur
- Kendrapara
- Jagatsinghapur
- Cuttack
Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of southern, northern and coastal Odisha.
Heavy Rainfall Already Recorded
Several districts recorded significant rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Notable rainfall figures include:
- Ghasipura (Keonjhar) – 10 cm
- Anandpur – 9 cm
- Kamakhyanagar (Dhenkanal) – 8 cm
Many other areas reported rainfall between 4 cm and 7 cm, indicating increasing monsoon activity across the state.
Potential Impact of the Odisha Weather Alert
The IMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall and strong winds may result in:
- Waterlogging in low-lying areas
- Traffic disruptions
- Damage to power and communication lines
- Losses to horticulture and plantation crops
- Damage to banana plantations and standing crops
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near vulnerable structures.
Relief From Heat Likely
Despite ongoing rainfall activity, some areas of Odisha continue to experience above-normal temperatures.
Jharsuguda recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 42.5°C, while Kendrapara registered the lowest minimum temperature at 20.6°C.
However, the weather department expects daytime temperatures to gradually decline by 2-3°C over the next four days as cloud cover and rainfall increase.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
The IMD has also issued a marine warning for the North Odisha coast.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on June 12 and 13 due to:
- Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph
- Gusts reaching 60 kmph
- Rough to very rough sea conditions
The advisory aims to prevent accidents as monsoon-related weather systems strengthen over the Bay of Bengal.
Monsoon Activity Expected to Continue
Weather officials expect rainfall and thunderstorm activity to persist across Odisha throughout the coming week.
With favourable atmospheric conditions supporting further monsoon advancement, most parts of the state are likely to witness increased rainfall, bringing much-needed relief from the heat while also requiring vigilance against weather-related hazards.
