OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Study Mode to Boost Student Learning and Understanding

OpenAI has launched a new feature called “study mode” in ChatGPT, aimed at supporting student learning through step-by-step problem-solving rather than simply offering direct answers. The tool is now live for all logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with a rollout to ChatGPT Edu users coming soon.

With this update, ChatGPT study mode is expected to become an even more effective educational companion for students working on homework, preparing for exams, or learning new subjects.

ChatGPT Study Mode: Personalised, Interactive, and Designed to Teach

In a statement, OpenAI emphasized that the study mode has been crafted to make learning engaging and interactive, offering personalized guidance based on a user’s goals and skill level. Instead of giving instant solutions, ChatGPT now poses guiding questions to encourage deeper understanding and critical thinking.

“Study mode is designed to help students learn something — not just finish something,” OpenAI said.

The tool also includes progress tracking and feedback, helping students retain knowledge and measure their learning journey more effectively.

Tackling the Real Issue: Learning vs. Shortcuts

As ChatGPT becomes one of the most widely used learning tools globally, OpenAI acknowledged growing concerns around students potentially relying too much on AI for answers.

“Its use in education has raised an important question: how do we ensure it supports real learning and not just quick solutions?” OpenAI explained.

The ChatGPT study mode directly addresses this concern by shifting the focus from completing tasks to building foundational knowledge.

With AI becoming increasingly embedded in educational environments, ChatGPT study mode marks a major step forward in ensuring that technology enhances — not replaces — genuine learning.
