Stock Market Update: NSE & BSE Declare September 5 and 8 as Settlement Holidays

Published on

Mumbai: Indian stock exchanges NSE and BSE have declared Friday, September 5, 2025, and Monday, September 8, 2025, as settlement holidays. As a result, trades executed on Thursday (Sept 4), Friday (Sept 5), or Monday (Sept 8) will only be reflected in demat accounts on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

While trading will remain open on both days, the clearing and settlement of funds and securities will not take place.

Why Are September 5 and 8 Settlement Holidays?

Initially, only September 5 was notified as a settlement holiday. However, following the Government of Maharashtra’s notification shifting the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad to September 8, the exchanges updated their calendar.

According to a BSE circular, the state government has declared September 8, 2025, a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Consequently, the earlier September 5 holiday was cancelled and reclassified, resulting in both September 5 and September 8 being observed as settlement holidays.

What is a Settlement Holiday in Stock Market?

A settlement holiday occurs when the stock market remains open for trading, but the clearing corporations are closed. This means that while you can buy and sell shares, the actual transfer of securities and funds (settlement) does not happen on that day. Instead, it is processed on the next working settlement day.

For example:

  • Stocks bought on Sept 5 or 8 will reflect in your demat account only on Sept 9.

Upcoming Settlement Holidays in 2025

Here’s the list of other settlement holidays in 2025 across Indian stock exchanges:
