Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s first local production facility for hybrid battery electrodes at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat and launched the export of the company’s debut global battery-electric SUV, the e-Vitara. The e-Vitara will be assembled in India and shipped to more than 100 countries, including crucial markets like Europe and Japan.
The Japanese automaker’s e-Vitara export marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward sustainable mobility and manufacturing self-reliance. During the inauguration, PM Modi underscored the significance of this rollout, calling it a leap forward for India’s EV ecosystem and indigenous battery production capabilities.
Maruti Suzuki has reinforced its EV support infrastructure: owners will benefit from smart home-charger installations, while public fast-charging stations will be introduced in the top 100 cities over the next 2–3 years, spaced every 5–10 km. The company further plans to set up 1,500 EV-ready workshops across 1,000+ cities for comprehensive after-sales service.
Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara launch: A leap in India’s EV ambitions
A sleek electric SUV with dimensions of 4,275 mm (length), 1,800 mm (width), 1,640 mm (height), and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, the e-Vitara integrates a 3-in-1 electric system combining motor, inverter, and transmission. Buyers can select from a 49 kWh pack (producing 144 hp, 189 Nm) or a 61 kWh pack (174 hp, 189 Nm). An AWD option with an added 65 hp rear motor delivers 184 hp and 300 Nm, with an estimated range over 500 km per charge.
Charging Support and After-Sales Expansion
Maruti Suzuki’s charging ecosystem is built for accessibility—smart home chargers with installations, to public fast-charging nodes in 100 cities within a few years. Moreover, 1,500 EV-ready service centers across 1,000+ urban areas will ensure robust maintenance support.
Comfort and Cabin Innovation
The e-Vitara boasts refined interiors: a digital cockpit with a twin-deck floating console, premium dual-tone soft-touch surfaces, ambient lighting, a fixed glass sunroof, and Harman-tuned audio. The driver gets a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch display, wireless connectivity, ventilated front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a versatile 40:20:40 rear bench that reclines and slides.
Safety and Structural Strength
Built with more than 50% high-tensile steel and a reinforced battery protection system, the e-Vitara comes equipped with Level-2 ADAS, seven airbags (including a driver knee airbag), all-disc brakes, e-Call emergency feature, electronic parking brake, and tyre pressure monitoring system.
