50% Tariff on India: MEA Calls US Move Over Russian Oil ‘Unfair, Unjustified and Unreasonable’

Published on

The Government of India has sharply criticized the United States after former President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total tariff burden to 50%. The move, linked to India’s continued purchase of crude oil from Russia, has drawn widespread diplomatic concern.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India described the decision as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The ministry emphasized that the U.S. action unfairly singles out India despite similar practices being followed by several other nations.

“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the U.S. should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” the MEA stated.

Reiterating India’s long-held position on oil imports from Russia, the government clarified that such purchases are “based on market factors” and are carried out with the objective of ensuring energy security for the country’s 1.4 billion citizens.

The statement follows Trump’s latest executive order, which accused India of indirectly funding the Russian war in Ukraine through energy imports and vowed reciprocal trade action. The sharp increase in tariffs is expected to further strain India-US trade relations, which were already under pressure due to ongoing disagreements over agricultural market access and non-tariff barriers.
