Sensex Falls 694 Points, Nifty Slips 214 as Markets Snap 6-Day Winning Streak

Published on

Stock Market Today: The Indian stock market witnessed heavy selling on Friday, August 22, as benchmark indices ended their six-day winning streak. The BSE Sensex plunged 694 points to close at 81,306.85, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 214 points to settle at 24,870.10.

Stock Market Today: Weakness in financials, IT, FMCG, and metals

The decline was driven by a sell-off in financial, IT, FMCG, metal, and realty stocks, reflecting investor caution ahead of U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. Global uncertainties, including concerns over new U.S. tariffs and signs of slowing economic growth, added to the pressure on domestic equities.

Banking and IT stocks drag indices

Among major laggards, State Bank of India (SBI) fell 1.14% to ₹816.10, while Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, and IndusInd Bank also slipped. IT stocks, which had been strong in recent sessions, reversed gains and significantly contributed to the sell-off.

Meanwhile, BSE Ltd. came into focus after its Public Interest Director resigned, sparking renewed SEBI scrutiny on derivatives trading.

Despite the sharp decline, both indices ended the week in the green. The Sensex gained around 709 points and the Nifty rose 239 points over the week. Analysts believe the 24,800 support level on Nifty is crucial in the near term, with Powell’s comments and global cues likely to set the next market trend.
