Hours later, Dr. Ricardo Hanel repeated the operation from Florida on a body in Dundee, achieving the world’s first successful transatlantic robotic surgery.

The robotic systems used were developed by Lithuanian firm Sentante, supported by Nvidia and Ericsson’s high-speed, low-latency network technology. The robot, connected to standard catheters and wires, was controlled remotely with near-zero delay. Experts noted it required just 20 minutes of training to operate the system efficiently.

The University of Dundee, recognised as a global training hub for interventional stroke treatment, hosted this experiment as part of ongoing research into tele-robotic healthcare. Clinical trials are expected in 2026 to make this system available for real patients.
